Does it count as mentoring when someone says to you, "I am going to mentor you now."? To me it sounds more like something someone is going to do to you, than something they are going to do for you. As a matter of fact, it really comes off a little bit, well, stalker-ish. What if I don't want you to mentor me. What if I say no, are you going to mentor me anyway? Mentoring is supposed to be about relationships. Like all healthy relationships, it should not have to be forced or coerced in any way. I don't tell my wife, "I am going to Husband you now" or my kids "I am going to Father you now." True, thanks to Facebook, I can say to my friends, "I am going to Friend you now," but that doesn't really mean much of anything in the real world.
Mentoring is about relationships. It has little to do with formal structure, and more to do with knowing and listening to those in our lives. If you want a mentor, or you want to be a mentor, forget the formalities and get to know the people around you.
